‘De Dag van Empathie is het bewijs dat mensen elkaar willen begrijpen’
Op woensdag 3 mei organiseerde Stichting Nederland Wordt Beter voor de vijfde keer de Dag van Empathie, op de avond voorafgaand aan de Dodenherdenking en Bevrijdingsdag. Tijdens deze editie Dag van Empathie zijn weer nieuwe stappen gezet in het doel om een empathische samenleving te bewerkstelligen. Het samenkomen van verschillende mensen, leren van elkaars verleden en heden, en een mate van wederzijds respect en begrip ontwikkelen zijn hiervan essentiële ingrediënten. De Dag van Empathie werd ditmaal gehouden op de eerste etage van de Centrale Openbare Bibliotheek Amsterdam. Een waardige locatie voor een noodzakelijk event. Qua zitplekken had deze ruimte weliswaar niet de capaciteit als de theaterzaal op de zevende verdieping maar dit werd ruimschoots goedgemaakt met het open karakter en het prachtige uitzicht over het water en de rest van Amsterdam.
Tijdens het event traden verschillende artiesten en sprekers op die allemaal een bijdrage over empathie leverden. Ook de manier waarop hoe zij empathie voor zich zien kwam aan bod. De bijdragen kwamen dit keer van Tofik Dibi, Andrée van Es, Derek Otte, Sabrina Starke, Patricia D. Gomes, Julia Zahra, Anke Laterveer en Jerry Afriyie. De host van de avond was Yasmina Aboutaleb.
Wat betekent empathie voor jou? Opvallend bij binnenkomst waren de kunstwerken van grote vellen beschreven papier waarop diverse antwoorden stonden op de centrale vraag: ‘Wat betekent empathie eigenlijk?’. Deze kunstwerken waren in de aanloop naar Dag van Empathie tijdens gastlessen gemaakt door verschillende schoolkinderen die op creatieve wijze tekst en visualisaties gebruikten om hun boodschap over te brengen.
Naast de kinderen konden ook de volwassenen tijdens het event antwoord geven op verschillende vragen met betrekking tot empathie. Zo was een vraag bijvoorbeeld: ‘Wat betekent empathie voor jou?’ en ‘Wat is het aardigste dat je deze week voor iemand hebt gedaan, of iemand voor jou?’. Hier kwamen verschillende antwoorden uit waarbij enkele van de opvallendste werden uitgelicht. Eén van de leukste was van een aanwezige die aangaf de teennagels van een vriendin te knippen nadat deze een operatie had ondergaan. Empathisch? Zeker!

De bezoekers druppelden ook in de loop van de avond binnen en het werd al snel duidelijk dat er meer stoelen moesten worden bijgezet. Wat vooral opviel aan het publiek was de grote mate van diversiteit. Jong en oud, wit en zwart, hetero en homo. Iedereen was aanwezig. Dit hoort uiteraard niet opvallend te zijn gezien het feit dat wij als mensen in deze maatschappij allemaal over empathisch vermogen beschikken en van ons willen laten horen. De noodzaak in deze tijd is om meer dan ooit van elkaar te leren. Deze avond laat zien dat er meer dan genoeg belangstelling is om het verhaal ‘van de andere kant’ te horen.
Sprekers Onder leiding van Yasmina Aboutaleb leverden verschillende (bekende) Nederlanders op het podium hun bijdrage. De verscheidenheid van hun invalshoeken maakt dit event tot wat het is. Het thema empathie werd vanuit verschillende invalshoeken bekeken. Er werd over verteld en gefilosofeerd voor zover dat kon binnen het tijdsbestek van de spreker.
Als eerste spreekt Tofik Dibi (oud-politicus en schrijver) die zich geregeld de woede op de hals haalt van de witte heteroseksuele Nederlandse man. Zal hij hier op termijn mee stoppen? Welnee! Hij vindt het heerlijk, en zal er ook mee doorgaan totdat er meer begrip en acceptatie in de maatschappij is voor homo’s en lesbiennes. Na de heerlijk rebelse speech van Tofik, is de beurt aan Derek Otte. Hij draagt een gedicht voor waarin hij met veel creatieve woordspelingen het thema empathie eer aandoet. Derek is verkozen tot de stadsdichter Rotterdam 2017-2018.
