Dag van Empathie 2018 – Tegen de Stroom in… voor een inclusieve samenleving
[/fusion_title][fusion_text columns=”” column_min_width=”” column_spacing=”” rule_style=”default” rule_size=”” rule_color=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=””]Op 3 mei 2018 organiseerde Stichting Nederland Wordt Beter (NLWB) voor de zevende keer de jaarlijkse Dag van Empathie. De Dag van Empathie werd in 2011 in het leven geroepen om meer empathie te bewerkstelligen, een doelstelling die ook in 2018 nog steeds relevant is. Om dat doel te bereiken nodigt NLWB ieder jaar sprekers en artiesten uit die een kijkje in hun leven geven of ons introduceren tot een verhaal wat we nog niet kenden. Voorafgaand aan de Dag van Empathie op 3 mei gaf NLWB gastlessen over empathie op verschillende Amsterdamse basisscholen. Als afsluiting van de gastlessen maakten de leerlingen kunstwerken waarin ze op creatieve wijze uiting gaven aan het thema. De kunstwerken werden na afloop van het programma op 3 mei tentoongesteld voor de aanwezigen.
In 2018 deden we dat voor het eerst in de Theaterzaal van OBA Oosterdok, waarmee in 2017 een samenwerking is gestart. De avond startte dan ook met een warm welkomstwoord van Martin Berendse, directeur van de OBA. Het thema van de Dag van Empathie van dit jaar luidde: ‘Tegen de stroom in… voor een inclusieve samenleving’. Een goed voorbeeld daarvan is Henry Timisela, die de aanwezigen met veel humor vertelde over zijn ervaringen als niet-witte theatermaker. Samen met zijn broer wilde hij een film maken met daarin de verhalen van Molukse Nederlanders. Fondsen en subsidiegevers vonden het project echter niet commercieel genoeg, waarop de broers besloten de film helemaal onafhankelijk te produceren en te financieren met een theatervoorstelling, die ze vijf keer op wilden voeren. De show bleek een groot succes en ze speelden vele malen vaker dan gepland en waren zo in staat hun verhaal in de film te vertellen.
Ook Dwight van de Vijver, hulpofficier bij de politie Utrecht, rapper, acteur en voormalig wijkagent, deelde zijn persoonlijke verhaal: binnen het witte bolwerk van de politie probeert hij meer bewustzijn omtrent diversiteit te creëren, met wisselend succes. Hij sloot zijn optreden af met een ontroerend gedicht, dat hij de dag van tevoren speciaal voor de Dag van Empathie had geschreven.
Fotografe Cigdem Yuksel, die in 2016 de Zilveren Camera won met haar fotoproject over kinderarbeid in Turkije, gaf de aanwezigen een inkijkje in een veelal onbekende wereld. Voor haar project ‘Alzheimer fluisteren’ legde ze dementerende mensen, veelal ouderen, vast met hun geliefden of kinderen. Zo probeert ze taboes rondom dementie te doorbreken en mensen aan te moedigen andere manieren te vinden om contact te leggen met Alzheimerpatiënten.

Optredens waren er verder van Meester Bart, die een aantal van zijn ervaringen als MBO-docent deelde, van dichter en winnaar van de VSB Poëzieprijs van 2017 Hannah van Binsbergen en van dichter Gershwin Bonevacia, die eind 2017 debuteerde met zijn bundel ‘Ik heb een fiets gekocht’. De avond werd op aanstekelijke wijze gepresenteerd door journalist en regisseur Abdelkarim El Fassi. Muziek werd tijdens de avond gemaakt door Jennie Lena, finalist van The Voice of Holland in 2015, die met haar persoonlijke liedjes de aanwezigen wist te ontroeren. De avond werd afgesloten met een akoestisch optreden van de band TemTemPiés, die een aantal swingende liedjes met een verhaal ten gehore bracht.
NLWB bedankt alle sprekers en artiesten van de avond, die voor een kleine vergoeding hun bijdrage leveren, de vrijwilligers die bijdroegen aan de organisatie van de avond en ons bijstonden op de avond zelf, de betrokken medewerkers van de OBA en de Gemeente Amsterdam, die ons met een financiële bijdrage steunde. We kijken uit naar wederom een inspirerende Dag van Empathie in 2019.
